SugarSync is a highly-versatile cloud backup service that is consistently ranked as one of the best on the market. It enables users to maintain files in sync across multiple devices practically in real time. SugarSync also maintains apps for all the major smartphones. It’s ideal for sharing and collaborating; it’s got a high level of encryption, and a user-friendly interface. SugarSync is so efficient that it hangs on to the last five versions of your documents and auto uploads the pictures you take with your phone. Like Mozy, it has a bandwidth throttle. It also has a Dropbox type component called Magic Briefcase that allows you to backup files just by placing them in a special folder. In the following SugarSync review we’ll take a look at the service and examine just what it is that makes SugarSync so popular.

The SugarSync Story

Sugarsync was launched back in 2008 in San Mateo, CA. The company rapidly established itself as one of the most highly-regarded and widely-used cloud backup systems. Today there are millions around the world who use the service, whether it be the free 5GB version or the paid service. SugarSync has also been selected as a partner by major brand name companies including BestBuy, Lenovo, SanDisk, France Telecom-Orange, and Korea Telecom among others.

SugarSyn relies on powerful cloud technology that makes it easy for users to access, sync and share data across multiple computers and devices. The system also makes it easy to share media files such as documents, MP3s, movies and photos.

What SugarSync Reviews are Saying called SugarSync the best they’d tested in terms of online cloud backup services. Sugarsync reviews around the web generally indicate that the service is a capable file synchronization utility that offers a free 5GB account to anyone who wants to sign up for one. One common complaint however, is the lack of an unlimited backup option.

Getting Started with SugarSync

SugarSync is a highly intuitive service that’s easy to get started with and easy to use once you’re up and running. We signed up for SugarSync free service by going to the SugarSync website. We found the option to sign up for the free service right on the landing page.

Once you download SugarSync you are provided with the option of choosing a free account.

The 5GB version of SugarSync is free. The service also makes it easy for you to upgrade to one of the paid packages.

Supported Operating Systems

SugarSync is compatible with every major operating system on the market; including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian. There is also currently a Linux version that’s in beta.

Backup Features

SugarSync offers backups in real time. The service continually backs up your files throughout the day. This is different from many other services that merely back up your files once a day.

Syncing your files using SugarSync is easy. You simply mark the box for the files you want to backup. Keep in mind that you can’t back up too many files without subscribing for one of the paid packages.

 Web/Mobile/Remote Access

Accessing SugarSync is easy and can be accomplished over the web and by using a mobile device such as a phone. Sugarsync supports most major mobile devices on the market these days. It can be used to access your backed up files from just about anywhere by using an iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, Symbian and Windows Mobile. By using SugarSync it’s possible to sync your data across multiple computers and devices.

Available Packages and Prices

There are four different packages available for SugarSync subscribers.

The entry-level package is the 30GB version that costs $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year. It allows you to backup and readily access up to 3,000 documents, 6,000 photos, and 6,000 songs.

Next up is the 60GB version. At $9.99 a month and $99.99 a year, it costs twice as much. However it enables you to backup 6,000 documents, 10,000 photos and 10,000 songs.

The 100GB version is $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year. It’s got much great storage capacity with room for backing up 10,000 documents, 20,000 photos and 15,000 songs.

If you really want to back up high volumes of data you’ll want to use the 250GB version. It’s not cheap at $24.99 a month or $249.99 a year. However it gives you massive online backup capacity with enough backup storage space for 25,000 documents, 40,000 photographs and 30,000 songs.

As you can see from the image above, the 60GB version is the most popular and should be ideal for most people. One nice feature is that a Sugarsync free 30-day trial is available for any version of the service you wish to try out. Also when compared to other popular cloud backup services like Dropbox, SugarSync’s array of packages are fairly affordable.

Using SugarSync makes it possible to share large folders and files with friends, family members and colleagues. With just a few clicks, it’s possible to share anything from a single file to an entire folder filled with hundreds of files.

To share files with SugarSync, simply click on the files you wish to share and then click the share button as shown below.

Syncing files is easy with SugarSync. One of the thing that separates it from other popular services is that there is no need to use any kind of “magic folder” to sync files with it. By using the service it’s possible to sync any existing folder or file.

SugarSync has an online support portal that offers video tutorials as well as a chat room for online community. If you need actual support they have an email link as well as a chat feature that allows you to speak to a customer support rep.

Unfortunately according to many SugarSync 2013 reviews, support for the service can be frustrating at best and practically nonexistent at worst.

Available Payment Options

SugarSync accepts all major payment platforms including: MasterCard, America Express, Discover, Visa and PayPal

SugarSync is less intuitive than some services and costs a bit more as well. But generally it’s one of the more well rounded services out there. It’s very non-invasive with little more than an icon in your menu bar that tells you it’s active. If you want capability with a price that’s somewhere in the middle, Sugar Sync is definitely worth looking into. It’s got one of the best music streaming features of any cloud backup service on the market, which makes SugarSync iPad and iPod use really easy and fun.
